The Best Hotels in Las Vegas 735x1102

Rain and snowstorms are plaguing cities across the country, but in sunny Las Vegas, it’s time to swim.

With March considered the kickoff for pool season in Las Vegas, several resort pools and pool clubs are now open for business—and pleasure.

Just about every resort in Las Vegas has a pool (or several pools) and sometimes a corresponding day club. Usually, there’s a café and bar, or two, plus cabanas and daybeds (for a fee).

It sounds like a standard formula, but in Vegas, it’s anything but–each property goes above and beyond to put its own unique twist on staying cool in the pool.

At the Tank Pool at the Golden Nugget in Downtown Las Vegas, for instance, swimmers can soar past sharks and other sea creatures on a three-story slide.

Mandalay Bay on the Las Vegas Strip has its own sandy beach, a wave pool, and a lazy river.

The Elation pool at the Strat Hotel, Casino, and Skypod is located high above the Strip on the property’s 8th floor.

You really can’t go wrong at a Las Vegas hotel pool, but here’s a look at a few that are currently floating our boat.

The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas

Whether you’re looking for a raucous party or just want to soak up some sun, the Pool District at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas has something for everyone, including two separate rooftop pools and a day club.

Overlooking the glittering Las Vegas Strip, the resort’s upbeat Boulevard Pool bubbles with energy day and night. Wake up with a 60-minute sunrise yoga session by the pool, then wind down as the sun goes down with one of the resort’s signature drinks at sunset cocktail hour.

When you get hungry for breakfast or lunch, you don’t have to schlep into the hotel feeling like a wet towel. Instead, Overlook Grill is located just steps away from the pool.

Located nearby, the resort’s quieter Chelsea Pool is a bit more intimate. You can kick back here with a refreshing cocktail and light bites.

Resorts World Las Vegas

There’s a main pool and a family pool, plus the Bimini Pool, Cabana Pool, and the adult-only Athena Infinity Ultra Pool. The cherry on top of this tasty sundae is the party-filled Ayu Dayclub, featuring top-tier DJs like Tiesto and Zedd.

As its name suggests, the main pool is like the hub of the pool complex with three of its own bodies of water. Swim or soak up the sun with easy access to coastal cuisine, like shrimp ceviche and caramel-filled churros, at Agave Bar and Grill. Wander around the pool complex at your will; just be sure to reserve a daybed for the day for a spot to kick back and stash your stuff.

Vegas Pool Tips

  • If you plan to spend your Vegas vacation by the pool, do a little research before you book a particular hotel, so you aren’t disappointed.
  • Since weather conditions vary, even in Las Vegas, some pools may operate with limited hours until summer. Check with individual properties to ensure your perfect pool day.
  • Don’t forget to pack pool items like sunscreen, sunglasses, swimsuits, and hats. You can also pick these items up at a hotel shop, but it will most likely be at marked-up prices.
  • As for sunscreen, wear it whenever you go outside in the sun, not just at the pool.

Sometimes, the newest transformations in Sin City are rooted in the past, like the new Horseshoe Las Vegas, formerly Bally’s Las Vegas, on the Las Vegas Strip. Its namesake is the vintage Binion’s Horseshoe (now Binion’s Gambling Hall & Hotel) in downtown Las Vegas, named in 1951 for Vegas gaming icon Jack Binion.

Horseshoe Hotel Las Vegas Deals & Promo Codes

The new Horseshoe Las Vegas celebrates its rebranding on March 24, preceded by the opening of Pan-Asian restaurant M.Y. Asia from iconic James Beard-winning Chef Martin Yan on March 13, with even more changes to come.

The property has already welcomed changes inside, infusing new energy at the southeast corner of one of the busiest intersections of the world-famous Las Vegas Strip, across from the Bellagio and its iconic fountains, and diagonal to Caesars Palace Las Vegas.

The corner—at Flamingo Road and Las Vegas Boulevard—also has a storied past of its own. In 1980, it was home to a deadly fire at the city’s first MGM Grand Hotel and Casino. Bally’s Las Vegas later arose from the ashes in 1986 and grew until 2022. MGM Grand reappeared a scootch down the boulevard at Tropicana Avenue in 1993.

Horseshoe Las Vegas Hits the Ground Running

Though differences can be seen on the inside, the façade for the new Horseshoe Las Vegas is expected to undergo renovation in Spring. The 44-acre property consists of two 26-story hotel towers with more than 2,800 guestrooms, including refurbished Resort Rooms, and 244 suites.

The rebranded, 3,685-square-foot The Magic Attic showroom—once home to the classic, topless showgirl revue, Jubilee!—is now reserved for magic-inspired productions, another Las Vegas tradition. A new 7,000-square-foot arcade joins existing attractions such as Twilight Zone by Monster Mini Golf, Real Bodies, and National Geographic’s Rarely Seen photography exhibit, as well as The Cabinet of Curiosities, an eclectic lounge, and speakeasy, which opened in 2022.

Twilight Zone by Monster Mini Golf at Horseshoe Las Vegas

Summer brings the opening of Celeb Chef Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Sports Kitchen, a 6,540 square-foot restaurant and sports bar, replacing Burger Brasserie. The restaurant will show sporting events while serving American-style cuisine, capturing the restaurateur, author, and Emmy winner’s bold and funky style.

A former University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) Runnin’ Rebel, Fieri calls Las Vegas his second home.

“Like I always say, ‘Go Big or Go Home,’ and that’s exactly what we’re doin’ now by bringing Flavortown Sports Kitchen to Vegas, baby!” Fieri told the press.

Also in summer, Horseshoe Las Vegas will host the 54th World Series of Poker in its 70,000 square-foot casino poker room, along with neighboring Paris Las Vegas. The location honors the legacy of Caesars Entertainment’s WSOP; the first tournament was played at the original Horseshoe Las Vegas in 1970.

“Poker players and fans can now officially mark their calendars and maybe even book their loved ones or themselves a trip to the WSOP as a holiday gift,” said World Series of Poker Senior Vice President and Executive Director Ty Stewart in a press release.

“You can already feel the anticipation building at our resorts,” added Jason Gregorec, General Manager of Paris and Horseshoe Las Vegas.

Another new addition to Horseshoe Las Vegas is Jack Binion’s Steak, which opened at the property last year. A staple of Horseshoe properties across the country, it’s a hat tip to the man who founded the Horseshoe name.

The fine dining destination serves steak and seafood options, including filet mignon crab, shrimp cocktail, and a 24-ounce slow-roasted prime rib, as well as an inventive classic cocktail and steakhouse salad combo, the Bloody Mary Shaken & Stirred Wedge Salad. For dessert, the banana cream pie comes highly recommended. It’s made with the original Bally’s Steakhouse recipe.

“Infusing new food and beverage options is an important step as we transition to Horseshoe Las Vegas,” said Gregorec. “Jack Binion’s Steak is an iconic dining experience that guests have grown to love at Horseshoe Casinos, and we are proud to bring it to The Strip.”

M.Y. Asia is the property’s newest restaurant, featuring an exhibition kitchen filled with noodle-pulling action and the occasional changing face kung-fu dance performance, led by Chef Yan.

An international food ambassador with four decades in the culinary industry, Yan owns several restaurants and has written 30-plus cookbooks. He’s known around the world as a judge on the Food Network’s Iron Chef and for hosting his own cooking show, Yan Can Cook, since 1978.

“Having traveled through Korea and Japan in the North, to Thailand, Singapore, and Vietnam in the South, and through the many fabulous food meccas in China and all over Asia, allowed me to fill my culinary treasure chest with unique, colorful, authentic and tasty dishes,” Chef Martin Yan told the press, noting that he aims to “educate and entertain with food.”

A preview of the M.Y. Asia menu includes traditional dishes with global influences and a whimsical twist, like Korean and Vietnamese-style kimchi dishes and Pan Seared Chilean Sea Bass, marinated in Jasmine tea.

The 5,300-square-foot space includes a retail area, noodle bar, dining room, private dining room, open kitchen, and Yan’s signature, The Lucky Bell Bar. Near the entrance, food lockers provide a non-contact, to-go option, where guests may order, pay and pick up orders.

“We are delighted to welcome an award-winning chef to our culinary roster at Horseshoe,” said  Gregorec. “M.Y. Asia is a fantastic dining option, and we can’t wait to introduce Chef Martin Yan’s talent and cuisine to our guests.”

With Durango Casino & Resort in Las Vegas on schedule for a Fall 2023 opening, details recently emerged about the future Station Casinos property’s fancy food hall – and they’re tasty, to say the least.

Durango Las Vegas Casino & Resort Opening Fall 2023

Spanning 25,000 square feet, the open-space eatery, called Eat Your Heart Out, promises nearly a dozen exciting culinary offerings including new-to-market concepts from seasoned chefs like James Beard award-winning chef Marc Vetri and a handful of local favorites. Food will range from burgers and pizza to sushi and street food.

“Every detail has been carefully curated, from hand-selected creative concepts to venue design, bringing together a playful culinary epicenter and includes a variety of options to choose from based on preference, taste or mood,” said David Horn, vice president, and general manager at Durango Casino & Resort, in a press release. “We’re fortunate to have such exciting partners working alongside us to bring these impressive culinary offerings to life.”

When LasVegasJaunt.com last checked in with Station Casinos and its parent Company Red Rock Resorts in 2022, the Las Vegas-based hotel and casino company was making headlines for some exciting land grabs around the Las Vegas Valley—including 126 acres on the south side of Las Vegas Boulevard South and Cactus Avenue and 67 acres at Losee Road and the 215 Beltway in North Las Vegas.

Construction on Durango Casino & Resort, near Interstate 215 and Durango Drive in the Southwest valley, had only just begun. The now-defunct Texas Station Gambling Hall & Hotel, Fiesta Rancho Casino Hotel, and Fiesta Henderson Casino Hotel were sold and scheduled to be immediately demolished.

Durango Las Vegas Casino & Resort in Construction

So far, 2023 has been just as busy for Station Casinos and Red Rock Resorts, which plan to double their hotel portfolio by 2030. Earlier this month, the company opened a brand-new Wildfire Casino in downtown Las Vegas, at 2700 Fremont Street, near Charleston Boulevard—one of seven around the valley. The downtown location is 21,000-square-foot with 200 slot machines, bar-top gaming and electronic table games, plus a sportsbook.

Other Station Casino properties around the Las Vegas valley and Henderson include Boulder Station Hotel & Casino, Green Valley Ranch Resort Spa Casino (Henderson), Palace Station Hotel & Casino, Santa Fe Station Hotel & Casino, Red Rock Casino Resort Spa (Summerlin) and Sunset Station Hotel & Casino (Henderson).

As for the $750 million, 71-acre Durango Casino & Resort—it has risen from the desert and is taking shape for a projected opening around October. It is being built in the busy and growing Rhodes Ranch neighborhood of Southwest Las Vegas, alongside some noteworthy neighbors, including IKEA to the north and the mixed-use UnCommons development to the west.

Station Casinos describes Durango Casino & Resort as a boutique gaming and resort experience that’s inspired by the warm colors and vibrant landscapes of the desert.

Durango Casino & Resort by Station Casinos Las Vegas Rendering

Beyond the food hall, the property will feature a lobby bar, 83,000 square feet of casino space with 2,000 slots and 40 table games; a 200-room and suite hotel tower; race and sportsbook; resort pool with private cabanas; and an event lawn for parties and gatherings, as well as:

  • 40 electric vehicle charging stations
  • Bike parking and multiple bike lanes with access to the property
  • 20,000 square feet of meeting and convention space
  • Four signature food and beverage outlets, including a Mexican restaurant from Clique Hospitality, a coastal grill from Lettuce Entertain Restaurants, and a steakhouse from property Executive Chef Danny Ye

Additional amenities like a movie theater, bowling alley, and movie theater—which are on-site at many other Station Casinos properties—may be added in the future.

When it comes to eating your heart out at Eat Your Heart Out, the company promises lush greenery and a communal feel with dine-in tables, counter seating, and an outdoor patio. Each restaurant outlet will have its own unique storefront.

Restaurants slated for the food hall include:

  • Ai Pono Café: Owned by Chef Gene Villiatora, it will feature authentic Hawaii street food like Ahi Tuna Katsu and “Crackhead” Chicken
  • Fiorella: A pasta bar with daily hand-made pasta, antipasti, and dessert, from celebrated Chef Marc Vetri
  • Irv’s Burgers: This Los Angeles favorite is known for its classic roadside burgers and fries, plus premium comfort food at affordable prices
  • Prince Street Pizza: The home of the Soho Square pizza, with a variety of New York and Sicilian-style pizzas
  • Uncle Paulie’s: Longtime friends Paulie James and Jon Buscemi recreate memories of their favorite New York neighborhood delis with a classic menu and signature sandwiches
  • Yu Or Mi Sushi: This intimate, high-quality Japanese restaurant expands to the southwest valley from Downtown Las Vegas
  • Shang Artisan Noodle: Another Las Vegas favorite, Shang Artisan Noodle elevates the Chinese culinary tradition of handmade noodles
  • Nielsen’s Frozen Custard: Born in Henderson, a creamy and refreshing frozen treat
  • Oyster Bar: Counter seating and signature seafood dishes in the heart of the casino action
  • Vesta Coffee: Made-to-order coffee from a local roaster, serving some of the world’s finest specialty coffees from around the world
  • DRNK: A lively bar known for colorful frozen drinks and a low-key atmosphere

Can’t wait until fall to see the finished Durango product? An 8-foot wide, 4-foot-tall Durango Casino & Resort miniature model is currently on display on the casino floor at Red Rock Resort, Spa & Casino in Summerlin.

Perched at 1 Fremont Street, on the corner of Fremont and Main Street, the Golden Gate Hotel & Casino in downtown Las Vegas has seen it all.

As the first hotel structure in Las Vegas (originally Hotel Nevada), the building survived the prohibition of both gambling and alcohol; the Great Depression; and the construction of the Hoover Dam.

Golden Gate Las Vegas (then Hotel Nevada) in 1906
Golden Gate (then Hotel Nevada) in 1906

The Golden Gate stood witness when Fremont Street was first paved for vehicles in 1925, and again 70 years later when the infamous stretch of road was closed to vehicles to become the multi-sensory Fremont Street Experience. Its legacy spans the birth of Vegas, the Roaring 20s, the Rat Pack era, and today.

In January, the Golden Gate Hotel marked 117 years as a downtown mainstay, offering a free specialty drink from the property’s Bar Prohibition! to the first 117 guests to mention the birthday. The bar was renamed in 2012 though the original design from 1906 was mostly preserved.

“Whenever we’ve expanded or built a new project, we have always felt it was important to respect and revere Las Vegas history,” explains Golden Gate CEO Derek Stevens, who also owns Circa Resort & Casino and The D in downtown Las Vegas. “We’ve tried to take something iconic from the past, fix or clean it up, and celebrate the history.”

A Bridge Between Old and New

Stevens took over the Golden Gate with his brother in 2008. In 2020, he opened the adults-only Circa across the way (replacing the Las Vegas Club, Mermaids Casino, and Glitter Gulch strip club).

Circa Resort & Casino Las Vegas

As the owner of both the vintage Golden Gate and the luxury Circa, the Michigan transplant is in the position of overseeing both the oldest and the newest hotels in downtown Las Vegas.

“It’s great to have the oldest and one of the newest properties only 80 feet away from each other,” he says. “You get to have a drink in vintage Vegas and a couple of minutes later … in the world’s largest sportsbook [at Circa].”

As for the pros and cons of owning both the oldest and newest hotels, Stevens says: “Things don’t break as quickly at Circa, but the things that do break cost a heck of a lot more to fix.”

While Golden Gate and Circa appear to be in sharp contrast, they “overlap in the Venn diagram of their experiences,” Scott Roeben, founder of Vital Vegas on Casino.org, tells LasVegasJaunt.com.

He goes on to explain that the Golden Gate was in rough shape when Stevens first hit the scene. “He used it as a testing ground, as he did with the D (formerly Fitzgerald’s), to test and play with the secret sauce, then used all the results to build his ideal casino [Circa].”

Roeben believes Golden Gate and Circa are “the bridge between what Vegas was and what it is, between the gritty Glitter Gulch and spectacle of the [Las Vegas] Strip.”

Staying at the Golden Gate

Recent online hotel reviews of the Golden Gate are varied, with some guests complaining about the size of the rooms, noise from Fremont Street, and the aging building. But most guests appreciate its nostalgic charm and helpful staff, as well as its convenient location close to the party on Fremont Street.

Along with being the oldest, Golden Gate is the smallest hotel in downtown Las Vegas with about 120 rooms and suites. The casino consists of a dozen table games like craps, blackjack, and poker, helmed by dancing dealers. There are also slot and video poker machines, a flapper-inspired high-limit lounge for big spenders, and a small sportsbook, operated by Circa Sports.

Amenities on the property are limited, and there’s no restaurant, but guests have access to some of the amenities at Circa, including the gym and the multi-level pool amphitheater Stadium Swim, and the pool at The D.

History buffs, meanwhile, may be interested in booking one of the “Original 10,” rooms from the 1906 opening.

Golden Gate Las Vegas Original 10 Room

You can also peruse artifacts and memorabilia—like prohibition-era whiskey bottles (found in the wall during a later renovation), a 1907 gaming ledger, and a vintage telephone (telephone number: 1)—on display in the lobby near check-in. The original two-way security mirrors of eras past can still be seen above the original gaming pit.

But don’t expect to find the Golden Gate’s famous 50-cent shrimp cocktail. While the property celebrated 25 million shrimp cocktail sales in 1991, the long tradition of selling them on-the-cheap, starting in 1959, ended at the Golden Gate in 2017.

You can now buy the seafood treat across the way at Saginaw’s Delicatessen in Circa, but it’ll cost you $11.

Ah, the good old days.

An Abridged Timeline of the Golden Gate:

  • 1905: The land for the Golden Gate (formerly Hotel Nevada) is purchased at auction for $1,750
  • 1906: The hotel opens with $1 a day room and board, and a small casino with blackjack and poker tables
  • 1907: The hotel gets the city’s first telephone. Telephone number? 1!
  • 1910: Nevada gambling ban forces temporary closure of the casino
  • 1931: Gambling is legalized (again) in Nevada and Hotel Nevada becomes Sal Sagev (Las Vegas spelled backward)
Golden Gate (renamed from Hotel Nevada to Sal Sagev - Las Vegas spelled backwards) in 1931

  • 1933: Prohibition ends
  • 1955: Sal Sagev is renamed the Golden Gate

  • 1959: Golden Gate founding partner Italo Ghelfi kicks off a tradition of cheap shrimp cocktails, selling them for just 50 cents
  • 1964: The property is renovated to look more modern
  • 1990: The property reverts to its historical look
  • 1991: Four Las Vegas mayors mark the sale of the Golden Gate’s 25 millionth shrimp cocktail (99 cents, at this point)
  • 2012: The Golden Gate adds a 35,000 square foot tower, port cochere, valet, and extended gaming floor with high-limit pit and dancing dealers
  • 2017: The casino is expanded, and outdoor bar OneBar opens with dancing/flair bartenders—the first major expansion for the hotel in 50 years
  • 2019: Small sportsbook opens at Golden Gate under the Circa Sports umbrella
  • 2020: Adults-only, luxury Circa Resort & Casino opens across the street, and shares some amenities with Golden Gate

The world is a stressful place. We get it.

Fortunately, Las Vegas is here to help. From boozing it up at a legendary nightclub to winding down in a chair by the pool, there are countless ways to let loose in Sin City, without judgment.

Are you the type of person who likes to blow off steam by throwing, shooting, or smashing things? You’re in luck. Tantrums aren’t considered socially acceptable for adults but read on for some excellent Las Vegas alternatives.

Throwing stuff

Darts

You don’t need the arm of a professional pitcher to chuck darts in a bar, just a steady hand and (hopefully) good aim.

Most bars have a dart board or two, but Las Vegas is soon to get its first dedicated dart bar with 20 traditional oak dartboards, semi-private throwing lanes, and a life-sized carousel bar with 27 seats. The social club, Fight Club Las Vegas, opens this fall at the Grand Canal Shoppes inside The Venetian Resort.

Described as a modern homage to British fairgrounds and pubs (the birthplace of darts), the Las Vegas venue will be one of a dozen other Flight Clubs around the world. At 16,000 square feet, however, it will be the largest to date. They Vegas-sized it for us.

Axes

If you always dreamed of becoming a lumberjack or a Viking, axe throwing may be for you. You won’t chop down trees or engage in bloodthirsty pillaging, but you will safely throw real axes at a bullseye, and that’s pretty awesome.

Just off the Strip at the Area 15 entertainment complex, take aim with an axe in a high-tech throwing lane or private room at Dueling Axes. It’s a lot of fun for beginners and pros, and there’s even a Cosmic Axe Night with black lights and a DJ on Fridays and Saturdays.

Amateurs and league players will enjoy an authentic axe-throwing experience at Axe Monkey in Chinatown Las Vegas. The venue has more than 20 lanes and axes made from real pine logs. On the other end of the Las Vegas Strip near Town Square Las Vegas, Sin City Smash features a one-hour axe-throwing experience among its other offerings (more on that below).

At Axehole in Downtown Las Vegas, meanwhile, there are more than just ordinary axes. Throwing packages include axes and other tools too like spears, ninja stars, tomahawks, metal throwing cards, and shovels. Dig it?

Axe Hole Las Vegas

Shooting Stuff

Guns

Gun ranges are all the rage in Las Vegas and most give you the option to shoot a variety of guns including pistols, sniper rifles, and fully automatic machine guns in a safe and satisfying way. The opportunity to shoot a ton of guns is particularly appealing to international visitors who don’t necessarily have easy access to such artillery in their own countries.

While the luxury Strip Gun Club is the only range on the Strip, there are also many other quality ranges in the area. Range 702, just off the Strip, has 16 dedicated shooting lanes and packages that range from beginner to Black Ops. Fire at a zombie’s face or save a hostage at The Gun Store or choose from 80 different types of firearms at veteran-operated American Shooters.

M56 Smartgun and M41A Pulse rifle from the Alien movies at The Gun Store Las Vegas

If you want to make a day of it, take a field trip to an outdoor shooting range in the Mojave Desert on the Bullets and Burgers tour. It includes transportation to and from the range, a shooting experience with machine guns, high-powered rifles, handguns, and a burger lunch with fries and a drink.

Meanwhile, at Machine Gun Vegas, you can have a literal shotgun wedding. You and your partner will say your “I do’s” as you fire the same Glock 17.

Machine Guns Vegas Discount

Paintball

Transform yourself into a living Jackson Pollock painting and declare war on your friends in the competitive game—an extreme sport—paintball.

Located about 10 miles south of the Strip, Combat Zone will have you crawling through dirt, watching your back, tiptoeing around corners, and hiding behind obstacles like a seasoned soldier. Dressed in combat gear and armed with a paintball gun, you’ll try to both shoot your opponents and avoid getting shot yourself and eliminated from the game. Players can choose from three fields with three impact speeds (you may not be using bullets, but paint capsules hurt too).

Smashing Stuff

Rage Rooms

Smashing up your Las Vegas hotel room is reserved for rock stars. Fortunately, we have a workaround that won’t land you in jail. Rage rooms, or smash rooms, are safe spaces where you’re encouraged to break every object in sight.

It turns out that smashing stuff is a great way to relieve stress and eliminate aggression. It’s also much cheaper than therapy with a shorter waiting list. Plus, since you’re covered from head to toe in protective gear, you won’t have to worry about getting cut, scratched, or otherwise hurt.

At Wreck Room in Chinatown Las Vegas, you’ll spend 30 minutes smashing glassware and old electronic equipment (keyboards, computers, printers, and scanners) with crowbars and baseball bats. You might even find a VHS tape among the pile with a title that deserves a good beating. Rage like a bull in a china shop. They supply the china.

There’s also a dedicated rage room at Axehole (mentioned above). The smash room here gives you 15 minutes of therapeutic smashing action. And let loose in a variety of ways at Sin City Smash (also mentioned above) including a rage room that simulates an actual workplace or kitchen and a splatter painting room. They provide the paint. You provide the splatter.

Best of all, you don’t have to clean up.

Reservations and a signed safety waiver may be required for the activities mentioned above. Most of these activities cater to groups of all sizes and can be used for parties and events. Be sure to contact the individual venue for cost and for age and other requirements.

Ready, AIM, Fun! Let Loose in Las Vegas by Throwing, Shooting, Smashing Stuff

Aroma Retail Promo Code

Save 10% off any order at Aroma Retail when using our special promo code LVJ10 at checkout.

Aroma Retail sits in a quiet shopping and industrial center, just west of the world-famous Las Vegas Strip, and within eyeshot of Allegiant Stadium.

From the parking lot, you might catch the distinctive whiff of a nearby dispensary, but don’t worry. You’ll quickly forget that skunky smell once you head inside the scenting shop’s sweeter-smelling pastures.

Aroma Retail Las Vegas

A locally owned company, Aroma Retail carries on-the-nose recreations of the scents found at major Las Vegas resorts as well as original blends, created for restaurants, resorts, banks, nursing facilities, and amusement rides across the country—and even a signature scent for the Henderson Silver Knights (the American Hockey League affiliate of the Vegas Golden Knights).

You can buy any scent for your home or your business from the company’s growing library of 90-plus fragrance blends, available in the form of oils, candles, reed diffusers, linen sprays, and wax melts.

Want your home to smell like an ice cream shop? You’re covered. A luxury spa? There’s that too. Set the mood to spark creativity or happiness, induce relaxation, or tap into holiday nostalgia. Bookstores, country clubs, wineries, swimming pools, a specific Las Vegas casino—the list goes on and on.

“Scents create a multi-sensory experience,” said Cristina Reding, who founded Aroma Retail along with her husband, Jim Reding. “You know how we decorate in certain colors? We also scent in certain notes.”

The Nose Knows

Perfumes have delighted senses around the globe for thousands of years with the link between smell and memory long noted in science and literature. As for the timeline for scent marketing, it’s a bit more recent, dating to the late 20th century.

The Las Vegas casino-resort industry stuck its nose into scenting around the 1990s (which is a little bit like ancient history in Sin City time). Nowadays, just about all Las Vegas casino resorts have their own signature scent.

The benefits of scenting for businesses are backed up by multiple researchers. In a 1995 study, for instance, the director of the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago, Alan Hirsch, found that players in the casino gambled an average of 45 percent more on a floor with a pleasant scent.

In her 2009 master’s thesis for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, TEDxUNLV host and author Gael Hancock wrote that fragrances also significantly affect the coin-in rates of slot-machine players in a casino setting.

It doesn’t only apply to gambling.

Consumers in a 1991 study by Hirsch were 84 percent more likely to purchase Nike running shoes placed in a scented room. In 2012, Washington State University researchers found that the presence of an orange aroma led to an average 20 percent increase in guest spending at a home décor store.

“Research studies, more and more, have shown the relationship between scent, mood, and feelings, even health,” said Cristina. “This is why businesses choose scent … it does really influence the sales volume and the length of time people are shopping in your store.”

Sweet Smell of Success

The first thing you’ll notice upon entering Aroma Retail is the featured scent, which rotates monthly at the front desk, known as The Smelly Bar. Here, you can seek expert advice, sample scents, and purchase products including the company’s professional, home and travel scent machines.

Beyond the Smelly Bar and administrative offices, Aroma Retail houses its own manufacturing facility, cleverly named the Ol’ Factory. This is where all the scent machines are assembled and the scents are mixed, filled, and shipped.

Aroma Retail Las Vegas Warehouse

Scents from Aroma Retail don’t contain phthalates, allergens, or Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). Droplets expelled by the scent machines are “finer than a morning fog,” said Jim, “under .05-micron droplet size.”

Jim, who previously handled scenting contracts as general manager for the Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian, offers signature scent development to clients at no cost. He describes the process as one which requires some trial and error, and lots of feedback.

Another consideration when developing a scent is what’s going to be happening in the space. “Are there any other odors present?” Jim asked, noting that “there’s going to be stuff in the space we have to harmonize with.”

For the Henderson Silver Knight’s scent, “Conquer,” Aroma Retail went with a blend of freshly forged swords, eucalyptus, and mint, with mid notes of an enchanted forest and masculine base notes. The scent can be purchased in the form of a candle, a room spray, or a reed diffuser at Aroma Retail or the team’s arena, the Dollar Loan Center in Henderson.

Aroma Retail Las Vegas Silver Knights Conquer Signature Scent

Casino scents, meanwhile, share a similarity with banks in that “you want people to have raised cognition, which feeds optimism and activity.”

There’s also the possibility that the same scents will smell differently in different spaces.

The Marriott brand uses the citrus blend of “Attune” for its properties around the world, but its Times Square location in New York uses “Pacific Breeze.” It turns out that “Pacific Breeze” is the same scent used by the Station Casinos properties, including Red Rock Casino Resort and Spa in Las Vegas.

“You wouldn’t recognize it,” said Cristina, “because everything else is different.”

Mark Your Scent

Cristina urges interested customers to stop by Aroma Retail on their next Vegas visit and experience the store’s giant scent collection in person.

Added Jim: “You can start by smelling the top sellers and then, from there, decide what you like better and go down that pathway. Our care team is really good at drilling down to the right scent, based on reactions.”

It seems to be the summer of Station Casinos.

First, on July 15, the Las Vegas-based hotel and casino company’s corporate owner, Red Rock Resorts, announced the permanent closure of three area properties—Texas Station, Fiesta Rancho, and Fiesta Henderson. Shuttered at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the trio of properties will be demolished, and the land sold.

About a week later, news broke that Station Casinos will potentially build a brand-new destination resort on Las Vegas Boulevard South and Cactus Avenue, about halfway between M Resort and the South Point. The company, which already owned the land on the north side of the intersection, purchased 126 acres on the south side for $172 million.

Station Casinos, by the way, is in the process of building the new Durango Casino and Resort, near Interstate 215 and Durango Drive in the Southwest valley, to open in 2023.

Durango Casino & Resort by Station Casinos Las Vegas

Less than a week after announcing its new purchase, Station Casinos was back in the news, revealing a casino-wide transformation for its flagship property, Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa in Summerlin. The luxury AAA 4-Diamond resort destination was renovated in 2020. Now it will enhance its dining, entertainment, and gaming portfolio with added restaurants and bars, an upgraded high-limit slots room, and an exclusive adults-only pool.

Some specifics of the new additions include:

  • Lotus of Siam: Once a small hole in the wall, Lotus of Siam is now a local favorite with two locations in the Las Vegas valley. The Thai restaurant’s third location will open at Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa in the later part of 2022 in partnership with the newly launched Bua Food Group owners Penny Chutima and Lou Abin.
  • Naxos Taverna: A new restaurant with traditional and authentic Greek seafood-focused cuisine, it will be located next to Lotus of Siam.
  • Kallisto Oyster Bar: An intimate oyster bar with fresh seafood options and 13 seats, also from Bua Food Group, it will be located near the entrance to Naxos Taverna.
  • Casino Bar: Perfect for pre-dinner cocktails or a nightcap, and with gaming options, the casino bar will be located between Lotus of Siam and Naxos Taverna.
Casino Bar at Red Rock Resort Las Vegas
  • Cocktail Lounge: Set to debut this winter, and currently under construction, this will be a lively, classic cocktail lounge, located in the former Crimson event space.
  • Adults-Only Pool Lounge: The former Crimson pool will be transformed into an adult oasis, steps away from the main resort pool. No kids allowed!
Adults-only Pool Lounge at Red Rock Resort Las Vegas
  • High Limit Slots: A high-limit room with Blackjack, Baccarat, and Roulette debuted at the resort in May. It will be upgraded from 12 to 73 table games and will also include a high-end cocktail bar and a dedicated cage.

  • Starbucks: An existing Starbucks in the food court will be updated and a second location will open in the hotel lobby.

  • Nielsen’s Frozen Custard: Coming in early 2023, the freshly made frozen custard shop will be located in the food court. This is the second Las Vegas location for Nielsen’s Frozen Custard.

If you plan on staying at Red Rock Casino Resort before the above changes are complete, it shouldn’t be a problem. A spokesperson for the property says guests will navigate minimal construction while on property. Most updates will be completed by the end of the year while the adults-only pool will debut in 2023, presumably in time for pool season.

“It is an exciting time for Red Rock Casino,” Scott Nelson, vice president, and general manager of Red Rock Casino, said in a press release. “This stunning transformation will usher in the next era for the property, and we are confident these new amenities are going to be a hit with locals and visitors alike.”

Opened in 2006, Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa is already a fan favorite due to its quality offerings and convenient location. The property is walking distance from the robust Downtown Summerlin shopping mall and a short drive to the breathtaking sandstone formations of Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

Red Rock Canyon Las Vegas

While the glimmering Las Vegas Strip is more than a 20-minute-drive away, you could feasibly go your entire vacation without making a trek there.

Unlike most Strip resorts, Parking is free at the property, but your stay (like most others in Las Vegas) includes a resort fee.

The hotel itself has nearly 800 modern guest rooms and suites, some with views of Red Rock Canyon (and truly breathtaking sunsets) or the palm-tree-lined three-acre pool complex. Relaxation and respite abound in the 25,000-square-foot Red Rock Spa by Well & Being, which is also home to a salon and fitness center.

As for gaming, the casino is full of options. There’s a bingo room, poker room, race and sports book, slots, and several table games—even poolside gaming. To take part in casino promotions, and earn points towards dining discounts, be sure to stop by the player’s club booth and sign up for the My Rewards Boarding Pass.

Restaurants here range from upscale dining options like T-Bones Chophouse and Osteria Fiorella to casual spots like the 24-hour Lucky Penny and a food court. There are also plenty of great places to dine (and shop) at Downtown Summerlin, so guests never have to look far for a fabulous meal.

T-Bones Chophouse Patio & Garden at Red Rock Resort Las Vegas
T-Bones Chophouse Poolside Patio & Garden

With no shortage of bars and live music, Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa is ideal for adults, but it also caters to families thanks to a 16-screen movie theatre, 72-lane Red Rock Lanes bowling alley, and the pool. Cosmic bowling is especially fun with its glowing lanes and party atmosphere. If you visit with your family in the winter, be sure to check out the festive ice-skating rink at Downtown Summerlin.

Adults who need a break from their children can drop them off at the on-site Kid’s Quest, a supervised childcare facility. Just don’t forget to pick them up before your return flight.

NHL, check. NFL, check. WNBA, check.

Are the MLB and the NBA next?

About 5 years ago, the gambling mecca of Las Vegas wasn’t home to any professional sports teams. That’s not to say this wasn’t already a sports town. We’ve had decades of historic boxing matches and the United Fighting Championship (UFC), plus minor league and college sports.

We just hadn’t graduated to the major league.

The absence of any of the four big sports leagues, or Big Four, was due in part to the perceived ethical dilemma of betting on a sports team in one of few states where gambling was legal. But in 2018, the Supreme Court struck down a 1992 federal sports betting prohibition; the decision to allow sports betting was deferred to individual states.

Commercial sports betting is now legal in more than 30 U.S. states (including Nevada) and Las Vegas is home to three major teams (with a possible fourth and fifth team on the horizon).

Hockey

T-Mobile Arena Golden Knights Las Vegas

The city’s first major sports franchise, the National Hockey League’s (NHL’s) Vegas Golden Knights, was born in the desert and played its inaugural home game at the T-Mobile Arena on October 10, 2017. Played in the aftermath of the tragic October 1 mass shooting on the Las Vegas Strip, the game opened with a touching “Vegas Strong” ceremony to honor the shooting victims; players were escorted onto the ice by first responders like firemen, nurses, and doctors, while survivors dropped the puck.

The Las Vegas Golden Knights made an instant impression with the local community and on the ice, skating into the Stanley Cup Finals in its very first season. While the team has not since replicated this success, subsequent seasons have been solid and exciting, with many ups and downs, and the fans can’t seem to get enough.

The arena is conveniently located just north of Tropicana Boulevard and west of Las Vegas Boulevard on the Strip, at the top of the Park outdoor shopping and dining district, just steps away from New York-New York and Park MGM Las Vegas resorts. Home games continue to be a Vegas-style affair with pre-game music and acts by some of the city’s finest performers.

Tickets to the Vegas Golden Knights average about $125, but hockey fans can also catch professional action for a lot less at a Las Vegas Silver Knights game in Henderson. The minor league team, an affiliate of the Golden Knights, plays at the Dollar Loan Center, a multi-purpose arena. Tickets start at $26.

Football

Allegiant Stadium Las Vegas Raiders

The same year that the Vegas Golden Knights hit the ice, The National Football League (NFL) voted nearly unanimously to relocate the then Oakland Raiders to Las Vegas. The team was no stranger to moving around, originating in the San Francisco East Bay in 1960, moving south to Los Angeles in 1982, and then back up to Oakland in 1995.

In 2020, Las Vegas opened the $1.9 billion Allegiant Stadium as the home for the Las Vegas Raiders and the Raiders Nation followed (though not for the first season of games, due to the COVID-19 pandemic). The Las Vegas Raiders finally welcomed fans to the stadium on September 13, 2021. In 2024, Allegiant Stadium will host Super Bowl LVIII.

Allegiant Stadium is conveniently located behind Mandalay Bay, west of the Strip, across Interstate-15. Tickets for home games start at $50.

Basketball

Las Vegas Aces WNBA

Formerly the Utah Starzz and then the San Antonio Stars, the Las Vegas Aces moved to Sin City in 2018. Part of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), the American professional basketball team plays at the Michelob Ultra Arena, formerly known as the Mandalay Bay Events Center. The arena is located on the west side of the resort-casino campus. Tickets start at $10.

Meanwhile, there are murmurs that a National Basketball Association (NBA) team may be coming to Las Vegas. It’s too early to know for sure, but interest comes from all directions, including Los Angeles Lakers MVP LeBron James, who said he wanted to own an NBA team in Las Vegas on a recent episode of his YouTube talk show, “The Shop.”

Jackie Robinson, a former University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and NBA player, also wants to attract an NBA franchise to Las Vegas. His longtime vision for the All Net Resort and Arena on the north end of the Strip has a projected opening date of 2025, according to the project website.

Las Vegas already hosts the 75-game NBA Summer League in July. The off-season competition brings NBA teams together to try out different summer rosters. The games—typically played by lesser-known players—are carried on the major sports networks.

Baseball

Las Vegas Aviators Ballpark

It’s anyone’s guess if the Oakland Athletics’ search for a new ballpark will bring the major league baseball (MLB) team to Las Vegas. Possibilities include the funding of a new waterfront ballpark in Oakland or leaving California altogether, with A’s officials rumored to be eyeing two different sites for a possible.

In the meantime, April through September, baseball fans flock to see the city’s minor league baseball team, the Las Vegas Aviators of the Pacific Coast League. The Triple-A affiliate of the A’s has reportedly drawn larger crowds at many of this season’s games than the A’s themselves. According to the Aviator’s Facebook page, the July 3 game reached 11,368 fans, which is its eighth sellout of the season and the third-largest crowd in Las Vegas Ballpark history.

Originally known as the Stars and later, the 51s, the Aviators hung up their caps at longtime home Cashman Field in downtown Las Vegas in 2019, sliding into a brand new $150 million Las Vegas Ballpark in the Las Vegas suburb of Summerlin. Games are fun and affordable with tickets as low as $13 and special promotions like $2 beer nights. Food ranges from classic concessions to a Chef’s Table, while the cocktail menu rivals many on the Las Vegas Strip.

Las Vegas Lights Football Club

The Aviator’s departure from Cashman Field kicked in the door for American professional soccer (or football as pretty much all countries outside the U.S. know it). Watched and enjoyed all over the world, soccer has exploded in popularity in the United States in recent years.

The Las Vegas Lights FC is a Division II league in the United States Soccer Federation (USSF). The team played its first soccer game at Cashman Field in 2018. Initial games were well attended but the field itself needed work. So, in 2019, it was officially transformed from a baseball diamond into a soccer field.

Fans of the USL Championship soccer team continue to enjoy quirky promotions like water balloon fights and hot dog eating contests, as well as meet and greets with the team’s mascot, Dollie, a llama. Cashman Field is in downtown Las Vegas, less than a half-mile from the Neon Museum and the Las Vegas Natural History Museum. Tickets for games start at $15.

Las Vegas Makes Winning Bet on Professional Sports Teams

It’s been a minute since Cirque du Soleil debuted a brand-new show in Las Vegas.

The modern circus company opened “R.U.N” at the Luxor Las Vegas in October 2019, but hit the brakes in March 2020, when the pandemic shut down the Las Vegas Strip. While most Cirque du Soleil shows reopened in 2021, “R.U.N” and sexy older sister, “Zumanity” at New York-New York, retired to the circus in the sky.

Now, Cirque du Soleil has stepped up its game with a new show, “Mad Apple.” The show debuted at New York-New York on May 26 with Vegas-style pomp, circumstance, and paparazzi on a pink carpet featuring the cast, creative team, and notable local entertainers and athletes like Vegas Golden Knights players, “Blue Man Group” cast members, “Chippendales” men, a handful of “Fantasy” girls and plaid suited magician Mac King.

There was also confetti. Lots and lots of confetti.

‘the Greatest Night Out in New York’

Like the hotel where it’s staged, “Mad Apple” captures the electric vibe of New York City nightlife culture and recreates it on a sparkling Las Vegas stage (from one city that never sleeps to another) with energetic musicians, dancers, comedians, magicians, and circus performers.

It’s a “completely new approach to Cirque du Soleil entertainment,” the company’s president of resident and affiliate show divisions Eric Grilly said in a press release.

“It’s an action-packed experience designed for today’s audience, who increasingly want to consume entertainment as they do content – in an exciting, highly compelling, and ever-shifting manner,” he said. “With ‘Mad Apple,’ you never know what’s coming next – from vocals, off-script comedy, and live music with our horns and drum line to acrobatics – all wrapped in an incredibly fun party atmosphere that differentiates it from other shows.”

Co-creator and executive producer Simon Painter, creator of the “Illusionists” franchise, explained at a press conference, prior to opening, that “Mad Apple” is a departure from story-driven Cirque du Soleil shows, such as “Mystere” at Treasure Island, “O” at Bellagio and “KA” at MGM Grand.

“They’re not playing characters,” he explained of the 48-member global cast. “There’s no storyline.”

Instead, he describes “Mad Apple” as “the greatest night out in New York.”

Concept co-creator and director Neil Dorward, an acclaimed choreographer, and director added: “The most important thing is the talent on stage” as well as “the audience experience.”

Mad Apple is the first Cirque du Soleil production in creative collaboration with Painter and Dorward. Painter’s company The Works was purchased by Cirque du Soleil in February 2019.

What to Expect at “Mad Apple”

“Mad Apple” takes place in the former “Zumanity” theater at New York-New York. The two-story, 1,200-seat theater and box office are conveniently located near an exit to (or entrance from) The Park Vegas outdoor mall. Tickets for the 80-minute show start at $59.

Though showtime is 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Fridays through Tuesdays, the show really starts when the doors open, 45 minutes before curtain. As audience members filter into the theater, they mingle as guests at a Studio 54-style party with live music, crowds, people-watching, and upscale bars mixing specialty cocktails – such as a Proper New York Gin Martini or a Manhattan in a souvenir flask – both upstage and downstage. Bottle service is also available for $300.

Two UpStage Bars showcase nearly 600 bottles, filled with an illuminated color-changing LED liquid, while the DownStage Bar transforms before the crowd into a stage at showtime. Flair bartenders and street performers interact with the audience as they fill the theater, adding to the fun and festive atmosphere, which continues throughout the show.

Whether performers are leaping across the Brooklyn Bridge, dancing near a yellow taxi or artfully balancing by one hand atop an enormous steel Empire State Building, New York is ever-present. The set includes architectural nods to all five boroughs of NYC and its iconic skyline, crowned by a 31-foot-long Statue of Liberty-inspired tiara. An aerialist, at the top of the show, is lowered to the stage by a glittery, apple-shaped disco ball. We also spied a hot dog cart, a Central Park sign spinner, the New York Times Crossword and a failed “drug deal.”

Families beware: Due to adult language and themes, children under the age of 16 are not permitted at “Mad Apple” and guests under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Don’t Send in the Clowns

Another big difference between “Mad Apple” and other Cirque du Soleil shows: Instead of clowns, there are comedians.

“Mad Apple,” which will have a rotating cast of performers, currently features stand-up comics Brad Williams and Harrison Greenbaum, and British freestyle comedy rapper Chris Turner. The funnymen were told not to hold back in their acts, adding to the authentic New York feeling.

“We’re not speaking in French, were not in a boat on a pool, we just get to be ourselves,” Greenbaum told the press. A New Yorker tried and true, he noted that when he first arrived at the hotel, he saw a few people in the lobby who looked homeless, “so I felt very at ease.”

Lead comedian Brad Williams jokingly added: “This is an authentic New York Show. We’re actually going to pipe in the smell of piss.”

Along with the comedians, dancers, and acrobats, the cast includes five lead vocalists and a five-piece band, helmed by musical director Xharlie Black (real name Eddie Cole). Together the musicians perform a combination of iconic NYC hits like “New York State of Mind” and “Empire State of Mind” as well as original songs.

“We are thrilled to get the joyous Mad Apple party started in Las Vegas,” Painter said in a press release. “From the moment guests enter the theater, they are whisked away to one of the most beloved cities in the world with a show that fuses hilarious acts from multiple comedians and daring acrobatics with the entertainment and eclecticism of New York City.”
