Western Journey Helicopter Tour

Western Journey trades a quick look for real time at the canyon: about 3 hours on the ground at Grand Canyon West, on Hualapai tribal land, between two helicopter legs of about 45 minutes. Count about 4½ hours from Maverick’s terminal, at the south end of the Strip, and back.

The flight out crosses Hoover Dam, Lake Mead and the empty stretches of the Mojave Desert. After landing, you set your own pace between the viewpoints: Eagle Point, named for a rock formation shaped like an eagle, and Guano Point, with one of the widest views of the canyon. The return leg finishes over the Las Vegas Strip.

The Skywalk at Eagle Point isn’t part of the tour itself. To walk out on the glass, which juts about 70 feet past the rim and 4,000 feet above the canyon floor, add admission through Maverick.

Everyone 18 and over needs a physical REAL ID or passport at check-in (a digital or paper copy won’t do). Children 2 and up need their own seat; under-2s can fly on a lap with proof of age, and under-18s fly with a parent or guardian.

Pack a camera and sunscreen; the gift shop has you covered if you forget something.

Travel light, a small bag at most: a hat and sunglasses in spring and summer, a light jacket in fall and winter.

There’s no hotel pickup: make your own way to Maverick’s terminal at 6075 Las Vegas Blvd. South, about half a mile south of the Strip’s hotels, and check in at least 45 minutes before departure.

Maverick flies seven-seat ECO-Star helicopters. The limit is 300 pounds per guest, and the pilot assigns seats for weight and balance.

Cancellation is free up to 72 hours before the flight. Inside 72 hours nothing can be changed or cancelled, and a no-show is charged in full; Maverick’s Ticket Assurance option lets you cancel up to 24 hours before.
