What Makes the Jabbawockeez Show in Las Vegas a Must-See?
Planning a trip to Sin City? If so, you may have heard about the wonder that is the Jabbawockeez Show.
You can cruise the Strip just about any time and hear some pulsating music. You can watch street dancers perform impressive choreography on the corners. You can stand in front of almost any high-rise hotel or walk down Fremont Street and see some awe-inspiring special effects.
Yet, never before has any Las Vegas show so expertly combined all of these elements to create a heart-pounding, goosebump-inducing thrill.
So just what makes this one different from all of the rest, and why should you spend your hard-earned gambling dollars to go see it?
Today, we're breaking down a few reasons why it's tops, and why you can't afford to miss out on this show-stopping adventure.
Ready to get into it? Let's go!
1. An Ideal Setting
Performed at the MGM Grand, the Jabbawockeez Show can comfortably accommodate an audience of around 300 viewers. That means from practically anywhere in the house, you'll have an incredible and up-close view of the action.
Before making the move to MGM, the Show was performed at the Luxor Hotel and Casino, which seated around 800. Though that space was impressive, it was ill-fitted for a 15-person troupe.
To celebrate their move to a cozy, more intimate setting, the dance troupe performed a flash mob to the delight of surprised spectators.
That was only a little taste of what was to come.
In this venue, the Jabbawockeez Show is allowed to be even more dynamic, over-the-top and impressive than ever before. They're also doing some pretty cool things with graphics and motion to improve the interactive event.
Now, video-projected images cascade over onto the side walls for an enormously immersive audience experience, making viewers truly feel like they're a part of the show.
2. An Intricate and Entertaining Storyline
Picture this: A pajama-wearing zombie is stuck in a world of boredom and dullness until he meets a group of dancers in white masks, who introduce him to a bolder, more exciting world through the power of hip-hop.
Nope, you're not flying a little too high on those free, slot-machine cocktails.
This is the basic plot of the Jabbawockeez Show, named "Jreamz: Journey Within," and it's just as mind-spinningly awesome as it sounds.
As the zombie (who's named PJ, by the way) interacts with this new world, he does so to snippets of music and impressive visuals created by none other than Robert “Hydro” Mullen.
If his name sounds familiar, he's the mastermind behind Justin Timberlake's iconic 20/20 Experience World Tour, which raked in a cool $232 million from 2013-2015.
So what do you get when you combine tech-savvy graphics, a smartly curated soundtrack, and a just-the-right-amount-of-crazy storyline with some of the best dancers on the planet?
You get the Jabbawockeez Show, and you love it.
3. World-Class Performers
In 2008, the competitive television reality series "America's Best Dance Crew" debuted its pilot season. That year, a group of dancers from the West Coast stunned viewers at home with freestyle moves that were original, unique, and unlike anything they'd seen before.
The result? They won the show and walked away with $100,000, enough to propel them into stardom and jumpstart their Las Vegas performing careers.
Like their peers, The Blue Man Group (who took their spot at Luxor after the switch to MGM), the individual members of the troupe remain concealed throughout the show, so you're never sure who's doing what.
They're also usually dressed in all-white suits and white floppy hats, with their faces painted white to match.
Here's what we do know: At least six of the dancers are long-time group members, and 24 dancers take turns filling in the remaining nine spots.
While they got their start as b-boy dancers and still incorporate that flavor (think head-spinning and break dancing) into their show, the dancers also experiment with more whimsical, free-form choreography that adds to the show's fancifulness.
So go for the experience, but stay for the talent. You'll be glad you did.
4. A Killer Song List
The Jabbawockeez Show has its roots in hip-hop and while it doesn't try to stray too far from that familiar genre, Jreamz introduces a few new styles of music that meld perfectly with the overall theme.
One of the most popular dances and songs? Michael Jackson's "Pretty Young Thing." You'll also hear snippets of “Bohemian Rhapsody” and even "Englishman in New York" by Sting.
Though the tempos are different, the feel of the music is effortlessly flowing. Each song moves seamlessly to the next, corresponding with the on-stage graphics and expertly timed choreography.
It goes without saying that music is everything at a live show. Even if there were no dancers on stage, it would still be worth the price of tickets to reflect on the nostalgia of some of the best songs from the past.
Yet, it's a good thing that's not all the Jabbawockeez Show has to offer!
5. Surprise Touches
If the zombie narrative weren't enough to amuse you, would a mock proposal using someone from the audience be impressive?
If so, you're in for a treat!
The Jabbawockeez Show knows that you don't just come to Las Vegas to sit back and watch a mediocre performance. Rather, you want dynamism and excitement, fueled by spontaneous surprises.
That's why they included a few surprises along the journey!
From a surprise mock "proposal" (using an audience member at each show) to an onstage rendition of Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky" poem and even an entirely mute segment, you never know what you're going to get.
So sit back, relax, and prepare to be entertained. You didn't come to Las Vegas for nothing!
