Tape Face is Sam Wills, a New Zealand comic who performs without a word, a strip of tape over his mouth. An America’s Got Talent finalist in 2016, he has been a Las Vegas regular since 2017, and since September 2023 his show has played the Theater in the Underground at MGM Grand, six nights a week.
What to expect
It’s mime, but a noisy kind: no talking, plenty of music, and everyday household objects turned into props and characters. The real material is the audience. Tape Face brings people up on stage throughout the show and builds routines around them, sometimes choreographed to pop songs, so how the evening goes depends a lot on how game they are.
Good to know
Expect volunteers, lots of them. If you’re picked, it’s more fun to play along; he directs everything without a word.
All ages, says MGM Grand: everyone 3 and older needs a ticket, and children 2 and under can sit on a lap.
The Theater in the Underground is a small room, about 250 seats, in the space that used to be Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club.
Sam Wills doesn’t play every date himself: on some nights another performer takes on the character. If it matters to you, ask the box office who’s on before you book.
Where to sit
MGM Grand sells three categories, VIP with Swag Bag, Prime and General Admission, and you don’t choose your seat. Its seat map puts VIP at the cabaret tables at the foot of the stage, with rows of chairs and booths behind them in two general zones, and marks a few booths along the walls as limited view, without saying which ticket they come with. What’s in the swag bag isn’t listed. Doors open at 7 pm, half an hour before the show, and guests with accessibility needs are seated on arrival.
